G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge

The Mumm Cordon Rouge is one of my all-time favourite champagnes. It is a simple and enjoyable champagne that, in my experience, everyone seems to like. Its fruit-driven flavours, freshness, and easy-drinking are its hallmarks. 

In Australia, we drink a lot of Mumm. In fact, we are the single biggest market for the house anywhere in the world so there is something about this champagne that resonates with us. 

For value, availability and drinkability, I really can’t go past the Cordon Rouge. You can usually buy Mumm Cordon Rouge for around AU$55 and it usually sells for less than $100 over the bar making it an appealing option on-premise.

In a few words… fresh and energetic. 

In a few sentences… Generous with its elegant fruit-driven flavours and just a hint of lingering biscuity, honey and caramel notes. For me, the Mumm Cordon Rouge is like a really good friend. Reliable and fun, with a great energy that is easy to spend time with.  

Moment or mood… This is my go-to with my girlfriends. At home or out and about, Mumm Cordon Rouge is fresh and elegant with just enough depth and complexity to stay interesting.   

Where to buy it… Available in all good wine retailers. Expect to pay about $75.

Tyson Stelzer… ‘The aspiration for Cordon Rouge is a fruity and round style. This is a cuvée that contrasts the rounded, toasty caramel effect of full dosage with the firm, dry grip of phenolic structure. It presents red apple fruit and bready autolytic complexity, finishing firm and sweet.’ 87 Points

James Suckling… ‘Both fresh and generous, with butter and patisserie notes to the red berries and candied lemon. This has good depth and plenty of charm with frank but very harmonious acidity that’s married to nice creaminess at the finish. Official Tasting Notes from G.H. Mumm

Eye… The robe’s golden-yellow hue, enlivened by a delicate stream of fine bubbles, extends a sparkling invitation to take a first sip.

Nose… First impression: a sensation of freshness, with rounded, delectable notes. Juicy scents of succulent white and yellow fruits entice, with hints of lychee, pineapple, praline. Appetizing aromas of pastry – yeast, brioche – heighten the anticipation.

Palate… Vibrant freshness and exuberant energy excite the palate. Complex and perfectly balanced, the wine reveals rounded, elegant flavors of fruit and caramel. The powerful finish is at once creamy and effervescent.

Food pairings… Mumm suggests crab and salmon roe tartlet at brunch to fried oysters in brown butter for entree. I enjoy the Cordon Rouge a lot without food or with bar snacks like sweet potato fries, popcorn chicken, or pork belly bites.

Blended from 120 crus (including grand crus, premier crus, and crus) 

Dosage – 8 g/l 

Aged – for a minimum of 20 months on lees

Reserve wines – 25 – 30% reserve wines, which may be up to nine years old.

Total annual production – 5-8 million bottles
